What to tip a sportfishing crew

Two mates in orange foul-weather gear rig a fishing kite in the cockpit of a sportfishing boat on a rough offshore day, rods in the rocket launchers behind them.

The short answer: tipping is customary on a fishing charter. Plan on 15-20% of the trip price for good to great service. On a big day, it can go up to 25%. Bring cash, and if there's a mate on board, the tip usually goes to the mate.

How much to tip

15-20% is the standard, and that's for good to great service. Go higher, up to 25%, when the crew really earns it:

  • You catch a ton of fish.
  • It's really rough offshore and they're really working.
  • They do a bunch of fish cleaning at the dock.

Example: a $650 half day works out to about $98 to $130. On a great day, about $163.

Work the tip off the advertised trip price, not the taxes or fees on top of it (FishingBooker).

Tip for the effort, not the bite

Fishing is fishing. Some days the fish don't eat, and that's not the crew's fault. You tip for the effort, not the bite. You tip on the hustle, the attitude, the safety and the instruction.

A good crew works the whole trip. They rig baits, set the spread, clear lines, coach you through the fight and look after everyone on board. If they just hand you a rod and you're on your own, then maybe you don't tip that much.

A mate swings a gaffed mahi-mahi over the side of the boat in a burst of spray.

Who gets the tip

It depends on who's working the boat.

Who's on boardWho gets the tip
A solo captain on a small center consoleThe captain. They're the captain and the mate.
A hired captain and a hired mateBoth of them. They split it.
The captain owns the boat, with a mateUsually just the mate.

Why the mate? The mate does the bulk of the work and gets paid the least. If you're not sure, ask the captain how the crew handles tips.

Tournament seat? If you bought a single seat on a tournament boat, tip on what your seat cost, the same way.

How to give it

The tip is usually in cash. Hand it over at the end of the trip, once the fish are cleaned. Some boats take a card or an app payment, but card tips can carry a fee, so ask first (FishingBooker).

Party boats

On a shared party or head boat, where you pay a fare per person, a fair starting point is about 20% of your fare, given to the mates (The Fisherman).

Questions anglers ask

How much do you tip on a fishing charter?

15-20% of the trip price for good to great service, and up to 25% for a big day, rough conditions or a lot of fish cleaning.

Do you tip the captain or the mate?

If there's a mate, the tip usually goes to the mate. With a hired captain and a hired mate, they split it. A solo captain keeps it.

Do you tip if you don't catch anything?

Yes. You tip for the effort, not the bite: the hustle, the attitude, the safety and the instruction.

Should you tip in cash?

Cash is usual. If you want to pay by card, ask the captain first.

Is the tip included in the price?

On the advertised trip price, not the taxes or fees.

Do you tip extra for fish cleaning?

Yes. If the crew does a bunch of cleaning, raise it to 20-25%.

About 20% of your per-person fare, given to the mates.
